Challenges in robotics: Part II - SLAM

Robotic technology has come a long way since the inception of the first robotic device in the 1950s. Today, robots are increasingly being used in a variety of applications, from manufacturing and warehousing to medical and surgical procedures. One of the key challenges in robotics is to enable robots to operate autonomously in unstructured environments. This requires the robot to be able to sense and perceive the environment, localize itself within it, and map the environment. The process of simultaneously localizing and mapping the environment is known as Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). By anticipating changes in the environment, the robot can adjust its behavior proactively, rather than reacting to changes after they occur. To address the challenges of hostile sensor environments, researchers are exploring the use of sensor fusion techniques. Sensor fusion involves combining data from multiple sensors to create a more accurate representation of the environment. For example, a robot that is operating in a dusty environment may use a combination of lidar and radar sensors to navigate, rather than relying solely on cameras. To address the challenge of handling a wide range of sensor types, researchers are exploring the use of modular SLAM architectures. Modular architectures allow different sensors to be added or removed from the system without affecting the overall performance of the SLAM algorithm. This makes it easier to develop SLAM algorithms that can handle a wide range of sensor types.
